RAHU response to Victorian Minister for Housing and Building Harriet Shing’s statement “Unlocking Land + Converting Buildings = More Homes”
RENTERS AND HOUSING UNION – MEDIA RELEASE
Sunday, March 2 2025
The Victorian Governing has today announced they are formally investigating the conversion of the former VicRoads Headquarters in Kew.
Minister for Housing and Building, Harriet Shing, has visited the unused mid-century office building, to announce the land has been rezoned for residential and commercial use to deliver “approximately 500 homes” including a “minimum 10 per cent affordable housing” component.
In conjunction with this, a raft of unused land across the metropolitan area will be “unlocked” for private equity to submit expressions of interest in April of this year.
The Renters and Housing Union calls upon the Victorian State Government to ensure these projects remain state owned, the offices in Kew be converted to public housing, and new public housing developments be constructed on the unlocked land.
Quotes attributable to Renters and Housing Union Communications Officer Flora Smith
“While the Allan Government forges ahead with the unpopular plans to demolish the state’s mid-century public housing towers, Minister for Housing, Harriet Shing, has demonstrated that these iconic buildings can and should be preserved as public assets.”
“Not only should existing public housing be preserved for the future, new public housing assets should be built wherever possible.”
