The Renters And Housing Union fights every day against unfair evictions through our advocacy, activism and campaigning work. In the absence of federal and state government support, many renters are facing the very real prospect of homelessness.
What is the Fund?
RAHU’s Eviction Fighting Fund was raised through community donations and is intended help stop or slow down evictions. The fund is to be used as an emergency stopgap to delay an eviction occurring after a failure to pay rent.
Eligible RAHU members in Victoria can receive 3 payments per year of up to $400 each. This could buy 3-6 months time to fight the eviction through the VCAT, prepare an eviction defense, find an affordable alternative or get referred to emergency housing services. Payments will prioritise First Nations solidarity.
Am I eligible?
To be eligible for the Eviction Fighting Fund you must:
- have been a RAHU members for one month or more
- rent in Victoria (we are looking to expand this, but this fund is built around Victorian eviction rules)
- have no safe alternative accommodation
- have received a 91ZM Notice to Vacate
- agree to collaborate with a Renters Rights caseworker (email [email protected]) and the union’s strategic objectives more broadly for the duration of the dispute
Everyone deserves safe and secure housing. Every donation helps.
