Message from the Secretary

13/01/2026 – Secretary ADU
Hello! My name is Adu, and I am the newly elected Secretary for the Renters and Housing Union.
This is something I’ve been very excited for. The housing crisis is one of, if not the most pertinent issue this country faces. In a political and economic climate so dominated by landlords, finance capital and developers, the activity and self-organisation of renters is integral to fighting for a future free of oppression and subjugation. As such, the ever-growing population of renters requires a dedicated union that I hope to contribute to.
This year will bring some serious challenges. According to the recent Domain Forecast Report, rents are forecasted to continue exceeding their record highs. The RBA is still being hawkish on interest rates. The privatisation of public housing, particularly in Victoria, is continuing to accelerate as state governments pay no attention to the voices of tenants and academics.
However, there are things to look forward to. We have achieved a lot in the union over the past year. We have reached 2,000 members. We have expanded our scope and established numerous new offices: Policy, Disability, LGBTQ+, First Nations, Inventory and Public housing. Members in Western Victoria, West Australia, and NSW have taken initiative and founded their own branches. In particular, the RAHU WA branch have essentially gone from nothing to 130 members, many of whom are some of the most dedicated members of the union.
It is from this good position which I hope to expound upon. From the governing committee through to the general membership, the people in this union fill me with great confidence, and I hope that I can inspire the same feeling.
If you would like to contact me with concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to send an email to [email protected] – we do still need volunteers to be the Office Bearer for Research & Policy, First Nations, and Social Media!
In solidarity
Adu
