EVICTION RESISTED!

WA SINGLE MOTHER IN HOME FOR ANOTHER 2 MONTHS!

WA Members spent two weeks, and worked hard to prevent the eviction of single mother Nicola from Social Housing by Foundation Housing. This resulted in an absolute win, with Nicola’s eviction delayed by 2 months with a supreme court order putting the eviction on hold.. Learn more about the situation here or some excellent reporting on the situation here.

Collective Bargaining Campaigns Call out

(Campaigns Committee)

RAHU members have been running the Collective Bargaining Campaign since mid 2025. This campaign trains people how to build renter networks with people sharing the same landlord. Through this we can directly confront those who are exploiting us, and win real results. Working directly with US tenants unions, who have pioneered large scale tenancy organising, we have developed a training and guidebook that allows you to identify what properties your landlord owns, build a network with the tenants in those properties, and collectively negotiate to win lower rents, repairs and better conditions. It’s a practical guide aimed at building collective power- Instead of facing your problems on your own, you can build a group of renters, identify your demands, and take them straight to the landlord. We have already trained multiple tenancy organisers and have around 6 active networks of tenants working to develop demands. Now, it’s time to take the fight to more landlords and scale up!

What the campaign needs is:

  • Multi Property landlords and slumlords
Know a dodgy landlord who owns a lot of properties? Let us know so we can start to organise those tenants!
  • Organisers:
We need more people to help organise against these dodgy landlords- if you’re keen to get some training on how to doorknock and build a renters network, we can provide this for you!
  • Researchers:
Want to help find more targets, or information about those targets? If you’re good at research, especially the type that can be used for campaigns, you’d be great for this campaign!

Reach out at [email protected] if you want to get involved!

The West Branch met on the 21st of January at Borderlands Cooperative in Footscray.

Footscray Community Response

  • We also need members who have graphic design skills to assist with creating social media posts in support of the FCR campaign.

The West Deserves the Best Forum

Inner South Naarm Branch

January in the Inner South Naarm Branch:

Members of the inner south are planning a migrant renters rights info session. We have a lot of backpackers and people on insecure visas renting here and we want RAHU to be just as responsive to their issues. Get involved by emailing [email protected]

We are also taking submissions for the Housing Bulletin’s second issue! This is a publication of articles, comics, interviews and more which will be distributed to the public upon completion.

Finally, we are urgently seeking new delegates to prevent the branch from dissolving as the current and only delegate will be stepping down in the coming months to put their efforts elsewhere in RAHU

Governing Committee

Update from the Secretary

This month, my predecessor has successfully handed over the roles and responsibilities of secretary. We have also successfully seen the election of the vast majority of office bearers, who have been integral to the early stages of my term.

Following this initial administrative period, this year will be one of action. Australia is seeing the acceleration of the privatisation of public housing, particularly regarding the demolitions planned in Victoria. Rents nationally are set to continue rising to record highs. Reactionary forces will insincerely weaponise housing unaffordability to push their own line. It is my goal this year for RAHU to exemplify the power of collective action, self- activity and grassroots organisation. RAHU will be at the forefront of a publicised campaign to prevent the continued privatisation of public housing.

This will only be achieved if the general membership are engaged, self-organised and proactive.

It is only through rank-and-file, collective action, do we build up the Union, and thereby a strong and effective tenants movement.

  • ADU, RAHU Secretary

Communications Officer Report:

This month was a bit busy with the refounding of the Comms Committee.
We had our first meeting of the year, and went into discussion about future endeavours. The biggest thing that has happened has of course been getting this Newsletter going, but was also busy with other miscellaneous tasks such as social media posts and preparing the statement on the new office bearers.

In January the Operations committee discussed our vision for 2026, how we want things to play out, and how we think we could improve. We are going to continue to encourage stronger rank-and-file membership engagement and load-sharing across the committee membership.

Additionally, we are beginning to experiment with fortnightly meetings, with the January meeting and two meetings in February scheduled to be two weeks apart from each other, and we are discussing a centralised structure for RAHU members to access documentation on how to effectively use internal tooling such as Zoom and Vaultwarden.

This past month RAHU’s Campaigns committee hosted its first meeting of the year. We plan to focus on the ongoing collective bargaining campaign, expanding pre-existing tenant networks and uncovering new ones. This year, we aim to bring more members into the collective bargaining campaign while also launching potential new campaigns, which members (new and old) are encouraged to get involved with. We hope to develop these further over the coming months.

Public and Social Housing Committee

Public and Social Housing Report:

There’s been continuous surreptitious incremental, as well as great, blatantly despicable changes on the public/”social” (P/SH) housing front of late.

  • On the one hand, remaining residents in Flemington and North Melbourne (Naarm) have been subject to ongoing harassment and dangerous threats to their physical and psychological health and safety.
  • On the other hand, only two days ago (as of 1/02/26), seven high-rise towers (especially dedicated to housing older people) were slated for destruction and private ownership over the coming period by the “Victorian” Government – those general agents of landlordism and enemies of the human right to decent housing.
  • However, on a positive note, thanks to the resistance and staunchness of RAHU members living in “Community (aka, farcically named “social” or private corporatised) Housing”, collective action has been taken to force their landlords to fulfil their responsibilities. This is proof of the correctness and power of solidarity embodied in RAHU’s collective bargaining approach.
  • I regret to report that none of the above occurred with my participation (as the [hypothetically] responsible ‘Office Bearer’), so far. However, at the end of last year and last month, I had discussions to the effect that our (extant) P/SH Campaign Committee shall arise as the phoenix, as a bright and beautiful P/SH Committee. As a result, there’ll be a zygote forming from the former into the latter, gestating into a fully formed body of action this month – if our wishes are realised.

Hence, our struggle shall form a fist of resistance against the thieves who are  working to steal our common social wealth. It is planned that this fist shall first be clenched with the sharing of RAHU’s newly developed ‘training package’ with committee members; then, with P/SH residents in our struggle to defend ourselves.

All for one – one for all! United we’ll win!

The Renters and Housing Union is a member-run union of renters and people in precarious housing, formed out of the rent strike as a response to the COVID-19 crisis.

We collectively organise for the right to safe and secure housing through self-advocacy, education, and front-line eviction defence.

The Renters And Housing Union operates and advocates on stolen land, and supports the continued struggle for Land Back and true political and material power in the hands of the many Indigenous nations across so called “Australia”.

As a Union we acknowledge the Elders and Warriors from across these nations and their unceded sovereignty and right to self determination.

Sovereignty was never ceded.
